LearningLearning is the art and science of acquiring new skills. These skills may be physical, mental or emotional. The most important question then to ask, before undertaking any educational activity, either as the student or the teacher, is "What actions constitute success in real life?" One educational system calls these the "job performance requirements." Since we are concerned with preparation for Christian Ministry, we call them "Ministry Performance Requirements" or MPR's for short. Before you take, or teach any Bible, theology, or ministry course, be sure you know and agree with the MPR's. If a course only proposes to have the learner "know" or "understand" things, and not to apply, analyze, synthesize or evaluate them, then reject that course. It is seriously flawed! This applies to every learning environment from Sunday School classes to seminary classes. But, one may object, "You have to know and understand stuff before you can do these other things. " This is true. But if the goals of the course stop at the lower levels you will get no help at the more difficult, higher levels. If however, the course is designed to help you get to the more important things, then you will, of necessity, pass through knowing and understanding on the way. Your value in the Kingdom of God is not measured by either the quantity or quality of what you have stored up or know, but by both the quality and quantity of what you minister to others. Keep this firmly in mind and your education will be rewarding to all.
