Narrative Structure

A tool that we can use to help us understand the meaning a Bible story and make a fresh presentation of it to other is call narrative analysis. This consists of going through the narrative and breaking it down into its component parts or structural elements.

This project may be hard to do using some translations. You might want to try the NET Bible.

These structural elements are: (See the slides.)

1. Abstract

2. Orientation

3. Complicating Action

4. Evaluation

5. Resolution

5. Coda

Here are some suggested steps for analyzing a narrative and finding the structural elements.

1. Make a copy of the passage that you can scribble on.

2. Go through with a pencil and underline all of the transitions. (See slide 7.)

3. Now, go through and circle all of the orientation material. (See slide 5.)

4. Now, highlight the statements of evaluation. (See slide 8.)

5. See if there is an optional abstract at the very beginning of the story and highlight it with a second color. (See slide 4.)

6. Highlight the resolution with the color you used for the optional abstract. (See slide 9.)

7. See if there is an optional coda at the very end of the story. If so, then highlight it with a different color or the color you used for the evaluations.

8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 until you think you have it.

9. Bracket the text between each of the underlined transistors. These are the complicating actions. (See slide 6.)

10 Finally build an analysis chart like the sample.
